This was my very first dog portrait, featuring my chocolate lab, Otis. Taken in 2011 when he was just a year old, it marks the start of my pet photography journey. I spent hours learning my Canon camera and experimenting in Photoshop, pouring my heart (and patience!) into bringing his personality to life.
Since then, I’ve built on those skills for over 20 years—blending the traditional foundations I learned in darkrooms and early Photoshop with today’s cutting-edge tools. Now, AI and modern software help me work faster, but the artistry still comes from knowing how to guide the process.
Is it cheating? Not at all. Just like picking up a camera instead of a paintbrush, it’s about using the tools available to create something meaningful. For me, it all started with Otis—and I’m still just as excited to create portraits today.
